Carolyn Thompson

Carolyn Thompson’s practice is grounded in the materiality of printed matter, both as an object and as a medium. Using books, found texts, images and documents as source material she explores the content or narrative of such matter through manipulation and appropriation, developing it into new visual and textual versions in the form of altered books, drawings, prints, collages, embroideries and/or installations.

Beyond the UK Carolyn has exhibited in Istanbul, Ljubljana, Melbourne, Minnesota, New York, Porto, Prague, Venice and Vienna, in galleries and institutions as varied as Center for Book Arts, New York, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, MAK Vienna, National Technical Library, Prague and Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne. Her work can be found in a variety of collections including Penguin Books, London, MGLC International Centre for Graphic Arts, Ljubljana and Laurence Sterne Trust amongst others, and has been included in exhibitions such as the International Print Biennale Awards 2014 and the Text Festival, Bury Art Museum in 2005, 2009 and 2014.

In 2019/20 her series of adapted Penguin books, Post Moderns, was exhibited in solo exhibitions at Laurence Sterne Trust, Shandy Hall, York and Eagle Gallery, London. A piece from this series was subsequently chosen as a semi-finalist for The Minnesota Center for Book Arts Prize 2020. Carolyn is currently Artist in Residence with Chrysalis Arts and North Yorkshire Archives.
